Simplified Visitor Visas for Australia

A new Visitor Visa structure will be introduced later this month as part of the Australian Department’s aim to reduce the number of currently available types of visas.

From the 23rd of March this year the existing 10 types of Australian Visitor Visas will be reduced to 5 types of Visitor Visas, as outlined here: New Visitor Visa Subclasses

New Parent Tourist Visas for Parents of Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents

The Department of Immigration has announced a new type of tourist visa scheme for parents of Australians: The scheme will allow parents of Australians or Australian Permanent Residents to visit Australia for longer periods of time than the traditional 3 months which are normally available on the generic tourist visas.

The new visas will be available for up to five years, a will permit up to 12 months stay on each entry for parents who are outside Australia and in the Parent (Subclass 103) visa queue; OR they will be available for up to up to three years with 12 months’ stay on each entry for parents who are outside Australia and not in any Parent visa queue.

Holders of the new longer tourist parent visas will have to have adequate health insurance, they may not be able to apply for further visas while they are in Australia, and they will be expected to maintain extended periods of absence between their visits to Australia.

The new visas should be available by the end of 2012.

Skills Shortages In Australia Mean That More Companies Will Be Looking to Recruit From Overseas

According to the Australian Institute of Management there is an acute shortage of skilled Australian workers in the construction, engineering, marketing and sales sectors. This means that Australian employers will be likely to step up their recruitment of overseas skilled workers.

The shortages are due to the continuing growth of the Australian economy, the continued growth of the mining sector, but also due to the failure of the education system in ensuring that school leavers are properly trained via apprenticeship schemes.

Australian Skilled Occupation Lists to Change on 1 July

The Australian Department of Immigration has announced that the following changes will be made to the skilled occupations list (SOL) on 1 July:

These occupations will be removed from the SOL schedule 3 as of July 1st 2011:

324311 Vehicle Painter

These occupations will be added to the list on 1 July:

234914 Medical Physicist
251311 Environmental Health Officer
251312 Occupational Health and Safety Adviser
251511 Hospital Pharmacists

271311 Solicitor
323211 Fitter (General)
323212 Fitter and Turner

So what does this mean?

If you were planning to apply for a skilled visa on the basis of the SOL Schedule 3 list only, and not on the basis of state or employer sponsorship, and your occupation will be removed off the list on 1 July, you may no longer be eligible to apply for a Skilled Independent visa and may have to rely on either a state sponsorship or sponsorship from an employer.

You must therefore apply for your skilled visa prior to 1 July (Australian time) to avoid being caught out by these changes.

If, on the other hand, your occupation will now be added to the SOL, then you may be eligible for a skilled independent visa rather than having to rely on state or employer sponsorship. We would therefore advise that you re-assess your options accordingly.

Lack of Skilled Migrants Contributes to Slow Down in Property Market

According to some the slow down in the Perth and Brisbane property markets may be due to a slow down in migration numbers, as well as an oversupply of vacant properties.

Property prices are monitored by the Australian Property Monitor and show that in both cities the median price of property has fallen or slowed down to a halt. This may not be great news for those trying to sell, but of course the opposite is true for future migrants who are considering purchasing properties in either cities.

For future migrants a slow down in the property market is welcomed, particularly given the strength of the Australian dollar.
